The crowd was thinning a little as Eloise met me at the lectern.
âIsnât it time for your break?â she asked, glancing at the clock above the door. âOoh, and perfect timing.â
I frowned and followed her eyeline. Billy Myers was at the door. And before either of us could move, so was Corinne.
âBloody hell, itâs like sheâs got some inbuilt tracking device for good looking men,â Eloise said. âAnd men too old for her at that.â
I gave a shrug. âAge is just a number and all that.â
Eloise didnât look like she agreed particularly, but her focus was on Billy and Corinne.
âHi! Welcome to Nedâs. Iâm Corinne.â
âHi. I was actually looking for Sophia.â Over Corinneâs head, he smiled. I raised a hand and gave a small, acknowledging wave.
âOh. Right. Well,â she posed a little and looked up at him through her lashes. âWeâre not really supposed to have visitors when weâre working.â
Eloise made to step forward but I stopped her. Billyâs entire being was relaxed, and confident. Just as it had been at the hotel. My friend looked round at me and I gave a small head shake.
âThatâs OK,â he said, âI already cleared it with Carrie.â
âI see.â Corinne replied, tilting her chin up. âWell, I guess a posh accent gets you special privileges.â She gave Billy a smile but being apparently immune to her charms, heâd now dropped in her estimation and there was no warmth in it. She stepped out of the way and threw me a cold glance. âIâll leave you to it.â With that she stalked back on her Bambi legs, inevitably towards Nate.
âGot a real fan there,â Billy grinned. He was dressed in dark jeans, chunky boots, and a cosy looking royal blue padded jacket. His hair was a little shorter than before and the tips of his ears were pink with the chill, as was his nose, contrasting with the green eyes that were currently sparkling with mischief.
âOh yes. She and I are like this,â I nodded, crossing my fingers
He laughed. âHi,â he said after a pause.
âHello.â
âNice to see you again, love,â Eloise said, giving him a quick hug. âSoph was just about to take her break anyway so youâve timed it well. See you again soon, I hope.â
âI hope so too,â he replied, smiling at Eloise before sliding his gaze across to mine. My friend patted my arm quickly and then headed off towards one of her tables.
âHow are you?â
I nodded. âFine, thank you. You?â
âYep. Pretty good. Iâve just finished for the day. Half day. Thought Iâd try and get some Christmas shopping done and it seemed like it might be an opportunity to see you. I missed you when I dropped the wreaths off the other day.â
âYes. Iâm sorry about that. I have another job and was at that.â
He studied me for a moment.
âDo you wantââ
âBilly! How lovely to see you again so soon.â Carrieâs warm smile greeted us both as she gave him a one armed hug, the other being occupied in holding her son on her hip.
